The Ballard and Collins-Maxwell track and field teams combined to qualify for state in 21 events during last week's state qualifying meets.

Ballard is sending 12 events, seven girls and five boys, to the state meet in Class 3A. Collins-Maxwell qualified in five boys and four girls events in 1A.

The state co-ed track meet takes place next Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Ballard girls tennis team also sent an individual on to 1A girls state singles competition after a strong showing at the 1A regional meet in Pella May 10. The Bombers also advanced in regional team play after sweeping Des Moines Hoover (5-0) and North Polk (5-0) in the 1A Region 3 first round Saturday at Huxley.

The Ballard boys tennis team was unable to advance anyone in the 1A singles and doubles district meet at Graham Park in Carroll May 8. But the Bombers defeated Kuemper Catholic by a 5-4 score during the 1A substate team meet Friday in Huxley.

The Ballard boys golf team placed third at the Raccoon River Conference meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club May 8 and the Bombers took second during the 3A sectional meet at the Majestic Hills Golf Course in Denison May 10. The Bombers shot a 304 over 18 holes at the conference meet and a 322 at sectionals, which was good enough to advance them to districts.

The Ballard girls golf team shot a 401 over 18 holes to place fourth during the RRC girls golf meet at the Terrace Hills Golf Course in Altoona May 8.

The Bomber girls soccer team suffered a 7-0 home loss to 2A No. 7 Adel-Desoto-Minburn May in Huxley. The loss put Ballard at 7-6 on the season.

The Ballard boys soccer team was dealt an 8-1 loss by 3A No. 4 ADM May 9 at Adel. The Bombers bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Grand View Christian May 11 at Huxley to improve to 4-10 on the season.

Here is what we learned from this week's Ballard and Collins-Maxwell high school sports competition.

Noe, the Drake Relays girls 3,000 champion and elite mile runner-up, will be defending her 3A state title in the 3,000 and going for first in the 1,500 at state after winning both events at the 3A qualifying meet in Carroll.

Noe won the 3,000 at Carroll in 10:01.37 and the 1,500 in 4:44.05. Bomber sophomore Annika Larson also qualified for state in the 1,500 after placing second to Noe in 5:01.65.

Noe also helped Ballard win the girls 4x800 in 9:52.65 and set a school record in the distance medley with a runner-up time of 4:18 flat. Larson, Brenna Baumgardner and Ava Richardson ran the first three legs in the 4x800 and Noelle Boettger, Kate Miller and Katie Tollefson made up the rest of the distance medley team.

Vance, Larson and Boettger also qualified in an individual race based on time. Vance will run in the 3,000 after turning in a time of 11:31.70, Larson the 800 after running a 2:27.97 and Boettger the 200 after finishing in 26.91.

The Ballard boys advanced two runners to Des Moines in the open 400 and also qualified in the long jump, sprint medley, 4x400 and 4x800.

Chance Lande ranks 13th among 3A qualifiers in the boys 400 after winning the Carroll qualifying meet in 51.29. Witt is rated 16th after placing second to Lande Thursday with a time of 51.83.

Chase Ihle ranks 15th among 3A long jumpers heading into state after jumping 21-0.25 at Carroll to place fourth and qualify on distance.

The Bomber boys 4x800 team of Trent Payne, Witt, Jakson Fleischmann and Lande placed second at Carroll and qualified 15th in 3A with a time of 8:19.80. The 4x400 quartet of Witt, Fleischmann, Eli Rouse and Lande took second at the qualifying meet and rank 18th in 3A with a time of 3:29.91.

Ballard's boys sprint medley team of Jayden Swain, Jaden Peasley, Rouse and Lande took third at the qualifying meet and the Bombers rank 21st in 3A with a time of 1:36.81.

The Collins-Maxwell boys will be sending five events to state and the girls four in 1A.

The Spartan boys will have Luke Huntrods in the discus, Ethan Haus in the 3,200, Isaac Brown in both the 100 and 200 and their distance medley relay team at state.

Huntrods placed first at the 1A qualifying meet in Madrid with a throw of 148-3. That ranks fourth among 1A qualifiers.

Haus ranks 21st among 1A runners in the 3,200 after placing fourth at Madrid in 10:19.45.

Brown won both the 100 and 200 at Madrid and he ranks 24th in both events after running respective times of 11.69 and 23.71.

The Spartan boys distance medley team of Brown, Caleb Dvorak, Josef Dvorak and Haus ranks 22nd after placing fourth at the qualifying meet in 3:47.40.

Chloe Wierson qualified in the 100, 200 and high jump and Mary Staudt in the discus for the Collins-Maxwell girls.

Wierson placed second at Dike in the girls 200 with the ninth-fastest qualifying time in the state at 26.6. She placed fourth in the 100 with the 15th-best qualifying time at 13.11.

Wierson placed second in the high jump and ranks 24th in 1A after jumping 4-10.

Staudt won the discus at Madrid and she ranks 10th in 1A after throwing 111-7.

Ballard's Katilyn Zugay is headed to the 1A girls state singles tournament after placing second in singles competition at the 1A regional girls tournament in Pella May 10.

Zugay defeated Clarke's Molly Sickles (6-1, 6-2), Saydel's Jenna Schnell (6-4, 6-3) and Pella's Claire Smock (6-3, 7-5) during the singles competition. Her only loss came in the championship match to Pella's Emily Blom by 7-5 and 6-0 scores.

Vanessa Nop also competed in singles competition for the Ballard girls. Nop defeated Pella Christian's Laurey Johnson (6-1, 6-2) and fell to Blom (6-1, 6-4).

In doubles play Ballard's team of Gracie Ross and Kiley Calvert defeated Clarke's Ava Hagen and Madisyn McCoy, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) and Red Oak's Merced Ramirez and Tessa Rolenc, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Ross and Calvert fell to Pella Christian's Katy Roose and Sydney Van Arendonk by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.

Ellie Volkmann and Jocie Hobbs also competed in the doubles tournament for Ballard. Volkmann and Hobbs swept Southwest Valley's Charlee Larsen and Ryanne Mullen, 6-1 and 7-5, and they lost an ultimate tiebreaker battle with Pella's Alloree Else and Lily Van Dusseldorp — winning the first set 7-6 (7-4), losing the second by 7-6 (7-3) and claiming the ultimate tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-4).

During Saturday's Region 3 first round meet Ballard secured both of its victories before singles play concluded to end each match early.

In the win over Hoover the Bombers picked up a singles win from Zugay over Mar Saw Paw in the No. 1 match, 6-1 and 6-0. Calvert, Ross, Nop and Hobbs all scored two 6-0 shutouts in the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 matches, respectively — with Calvert beating Hoover's Thoi Te, Ross downing Jaycie Johnson, Nop defeating Khaine Htet and Hobbs downing Genesis Perez-Ambrocio.

Ballard faced a stiffer challenge from North Polk in the semifinal match Saturday. But the Bombers still cruised into the Region 3 finals against Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Zugay, Calvert, Ross, Volkmann and Hobbs were all victorious against the Comets. Zugay swept Abby Mangae with a pair of 6-3 victories, Calvert scored 6-4 and 6-3 wins over Harika Cakinberk, Ross delivered 6-3 and 6-4 wins over Sophie Laib, Volkman earned 6-2 and 6-4 victories over Becca Aagard and Hobbs pulled off a pair of 6-0 shutouts over Teagan Wiseman.

The Ballard boys tennis team split its six singles matches and went 2-1 in doubles play during 1A substate team competition against Kuemper Catholic.

The Bombers' Caden Miller swept Hans Kraus in the No. 1 singles match, 6-1 and 6-0. Dawson Brekke pulled off a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) ultimate tiebreaker win over Kuemper's Jake Hausman in the No. 5 match and Isaiah Zeigler won the No. 6 match over the Knights' Braxton Lu — 2-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

In doubles play Ian Godbold and Emmett Miller defeated Kuemper's team of Kraus and Josh Langel in the No. 1 match in three sets. The Bomber team rallied from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to pull off respective 7-5 and 6-4 victories in sets 2 and 3.

Jace Krogh and Ryan Culp won the No. 2 match over the Knights' team of Hausman and Mason Reicks. The Bomber duo came back from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to score a pair of 7-5 victories.

The 1A district singles and doubles meet at Carroll saw Miller endure a 6-4 loss to Atlantic's Clevi Johnson and Godbold suffer 7-5 and 6-1 losses to the Trojans' Nolan Weber.

Both Bomber doubles teams lost to Kuemper's tandem of Langel and Hausman. Krogh and Culp were swept by 6-0 an 6-1 scores and Miller and Brekke were dealt a pair of 6-2 defeats.

The Ballard boys golf team advanced to the 3A district meet at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club with a runner-up performance at the 3A sectional meet held at the Majestic Hills Golf Course in Denison.

Ballard shot a 322 over 18 holes at the Majestic Hills course to beat Atlantic (334) and Bondurant-Farrar (334) for the second and final district qualifying spot. Adel-Desoto-Minburn won the meet with a score of 304.

Mason Gatchel, Brenden Wright and Andrew Princehouse each shot an 80 to finish in a five-way tie for sixth individually along with ADM's Lincoln Banwart and North Polk's Dyllon Ireland. Brady Kruger took 13th with an 82 as the final golfer to turn in a counted score for the Bombers.

Lincoln Miller tied for 17th with an 86 and Jake Oldenkamp tied for 33 with a 100 for the Bombers. ADM's Easton Korell and Grant Hickey were medalist and medalist runner-up with respective scores of 70 and 73.

Princehouse had a big day for Ballard at the RRC meet.

Princehouse carded a 72 over 18 holes at the Ames Golf and Country Club. He finished as the RRC's medalist runner-up behind Gilbert's Brock Snyder, won medalist with a 68.

Gatchel tied for 13th individually at the RRC meet with a 76 and Kruger tied for 16th with a 77. Wright tied for 24th with a 79, Miller tied for 42nd with an 89 and Oldenkamp finished 50th with a 94.

Alliyah Thompson and Maddie Kielsmeier gave the Ballard girls golf team two top-15 performers at the RRC girls meet.

Thompson carded a 91 over 18 holes to place 11th. Kielsmeier tied ADM's Tess Kenny for 12th with a 92.

Madison Maire tied for 26th with a 107 and Chastyn Gering tied for 29th with a 111 as the other golfers to turn in counted scores for Ballard at the meet. Aubrey Estrem placed 32nd with a 113 and Madelyn Baltes tied for 33rd with a 116.

Gilbert's Eden Lohrbach was medalist for the team champion Tigers at the RRC girls meet with a 71. Winterset's Jaya West was medalist runner-up with a 74.

The Ballard boys soccer team picked up some momentum with its home victory over GVC.

The Bombers jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half and scored 3 more goals in the second half to pull away for the victory. Luis Renk de Moura was huge for Ballard in the win, finishing the game with 4 goals and 2 assists, and Logan Huntrods added 2 goals and assists apiece.

Caleb Lehmkuhle also had an assist for the Bombers. Ballard keepers Parker Becker and Conner Pesci combined for 11 saves.

The Ballard boys had a rough time against ADM. The Bombers were outscored 4-0 in the first half and they never recovered.

Lehmkuhl scored Ballard's only goal against ADM off an assist from Brady Jimenez. Becker made 19 saves in a losing effort.

The Ballard girls hung tough with ADM for half before the Tigers went on a tear over the final 40 minutes. The Bombers only gave up one goal over the first 40 minutes.
