The Collins-Maxwell and Ballard girls track and field teams turned in top-five performances at their conference meets and the Bomber boys golf team placed third at the Gilbert Invitational last week.

The Collins-Maxwell girls took second at the Iowa Star Conference meet in Tama May 4 with 91.25 points. BCLUW won with a score of 115.75.

The Ballard girls placed fifth at the Raccoon River Conference meet in Carroll May 3 with 70.33 points. Adel-Desoto-Minburn dominated the team competition with a winning score of 170.

The Collins-Maxwell boys track team placed fifth at the ISC meet with 58 points. BCLUW also won the boys team title with a score of 144.

The Ballard boys track team took seventh at the RRC meet with 46 points. North Polk cruised to the boys team championship with a score of 176.

The Collins-Maxwell girls added a win at the Meskwaki Dream Builders Invitational May 1 with 164 points and the Spartan boys finished second with a score of 120. Ballard girls took sixth at the Cadet Relays in Iowa Falls May 1 with 53 points.

The Ballard boys golf team finished third at the Gilbert Invitational Saturday with an 18-hole score of 310. Knoxville won with a 307 and Gilbert took second with a 309.

The Bomber boys golfers also won a home quadrangular meet at the Ballard Golf and Country Club May 1 with a 9-hole score of 164, placed fifth at Atlantic with a 328 over 18 holes and fifth at the Briggs Woods course in Webster City with an 18-hole score of 349.

The Ballard girls golf team edged South Hamilton in a 9-hole dual meet at the Ballard Golf and Country Club May 2 with a score of 216 to the Hawks' 218. The Bombers took third at a 9-hole triangular at the Tournament Club of Iowa May 1, scoring a 226 to come in behind Roland-Story's 209 and North Polk's 218.

The Ballard girls tennis team blanked Nevada by an 11-0 score May 1 in Nevada and scored a 10-1 victory over Bone May 4 in Huxley. The Bomber boys tennis team won at Ames by a 7-2 score May 1 and picked up an 8-3 victory at Newton May 4.

The Ballard girls soccer team fell to Class 2A No. 7 North Polk by a 10-0 score May 2 in Huxley. The Bombers defeated West Marshall by 3-1 score May 4 at State Center to improve to 7-5 on the season.

The Bomber boys soccer team fell at North Polk by a 6-0 score May 2 and at home to West Marshall by a 2-1 margin May 4 in dropping to 3-9 on the season.

Here is what we learned from this week's Ballard and Collins-Maxwell high school sports competition.

Chloe Wierson won three individual events for the Collins-Maxwell girls at the ISC track and field meet.

Wierson won the girls high jump after jumping four feet, 10 inches. She placed first in the 100-meter dash, running a time of 13.46 seconds to beat the 13.59 effort by Janesville's Hayden Pugh.

Wierson also topped Pugh in the 200. She crossed the finish line in 27.76 and Pugh finished in 28.51.

Wierson also anchored Collins-Maxwell to a bronze medal in the 4x100 relay. Marissa Boege, Erica Houge and Ashlyn Leslie ran the first three legs to help the Spartans finish in 54.02.

Boege, Hannah Kimberley, Leslie and Opal Toornstra placed third in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:15.71. Boege took third individually in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.03.

At the Dream Builders Invite the Spartan girls picked up victories in the 100, 200, 4x100, 4x200, sprint medley, shuttle hurdle and discus.

Wierson won the 100 in 12.98 and 200 in 27.88. The Spartan 4x100 team finished in 55.01, the 4x200 ran a 2:03.24, the sprint medley clocked in at 2:05.31, the shuttle hurdle won in 1:17.85 and Mary Staudt claimed the girls discus crown with a throw of 109-7.

Paityn Noe set a new Ballard mark in the girls 1,500 and the Ballard boys set a school record in the sprint medley and won the 4x400 at the RRC track and field meet.

Noe's record winning time in the 1,500 was 4:37.40. Teammate Annika Larson placed third in 4:59.32.

Noe also won the 3,000 in 9:42.08 and anchored Ballard to a runner-up time of 9:58.83 in the 4x800. Larson, Ava Richardson and Brenna Baumgardner ran the first three legs of the 4x800 for the Bombers.

Kasey Larson took second in the high jump for Ballard after jumping 4-10. The Bomber girls shuttle hurdle team of Noel Boettger, Anya Jorgensen, Reagan Bartlett and Ally Baker clocked in at 1:11.34 to place third.

The Ballard boys sprint medley team of Jayden Swain, Jaden Peasley, Eli Rouse and Chance Lande broke the school record with a runner-up time of 1:36.02. North Polk won in 1:35.49.

Jameson Witt, Jakson Fleischmann, Rouse and Lande joined forces to win the boys 4x400 for Ballard at the conference meet. The Bomber team ran a 3:27.59 to beat ADM's 3:30.06 effort for the gold.

Lande and Witt placed third and fourth in the open 400 with respective times of 50.81 and 51.78. Chase Ihle took fifth in the long jump with a distance of 20-4.25 and sixth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.30.

At the Cadet Relays the Ballard girls won the shuttle hurdle in 1:14.39, placed second in the sprint medley with a 2:04.95 effort and third in the 4x200 with a time of 2:01.15. Individually, Brynn Wilson placed first in the 400 hurdles after finishing in 1:16.24 and Baker won a silver medal in the 100 hurdles with an 18.16 showing.

Luke Huntrods won the boys discus throw and Dane Beattie took second in the long jump for the Collins-Maxwell boys track and field team at the ISC meet.

Huntrods had a winning throw of 144-6 to beat out the 143-2.5 toss by Don Bosco's Mack Ortner. Beattie's best jump of 20-3.75 only trailed the 21-2 effort by Clarksville's Eli Schmidt.

Isaac Brown placed third in the 100 and fourth in the 200 for Collins-Maxwell with respective times of 12.02 and 24.01. Josef Dvorak was fourth in the open 400 with a 53.32 showing and the Spartan boys 4x100 team of Jace Huntrods, Cooper Wierson, Dvorak and Brown placed fourth in 47.19.

Full results for the Collins-Maxwell boys at the Dream Builders meet were not available at press deadline. But Luke Huntrods did win the discus with a season-best throw of 152-8 and he was second in the boys shot with a toss of 40-7.25.

The Ballard boys golf team had three golfers finish in the top eight individually at the Gilbert Invitational.

Andrew Princehouse, Brendan Wright and Mason Gatchel were the three Bombers to place in the top 10. Princehouse and Wright both shot a 76 over 18 holes to take fourth and fifth respectively and Gatchel carded a 77 to come in eighth.

Brady Kruger finished with an 81 to turn in the final counted score for Ballard. Lincoln Miller shot an 83, Jackson Brown an 85, Jake Oldenkamp a 95 and Drake Hosteng a 99 for the Bombers.

Knoxville's Evan Smith won medalist by four strokes after shooting a 71.

Ballard had two golfers place in the top four individually during its home quadrangular meet victory over North Polk, Des Moines Christian and Van Meter. The Bombers beat North Polk by four strokes, DMC by 12 and Van Meter by 24.

Princehouse was medalist runner-up in the meet with a 40 over nine holes. North Polk's Dyllon Ireland won medalist with a 39.

Wright placed fourth for Ballard with a 41. Gatchel and Kruger came in sixth and seventh with respective scores of 43 and 45.

Miller placed 14th with a 48 and Oldenkamp 21st with a 52.

At the Atlantic Invitational Ballard was led by Gatchel's 13th-place 18-hole round of 78. Miller tied for 26th with an 82 and Wright and Princehouse both tied for 32nd with an 84.

Kruger tied for 35th with an 85 and Oldenkamp tied for 57th with a 93.

Smith won medalist at Atlantic for Knoxville after carding a 67 to take first by five strokes.

At the Briggs Woods course in Webster City Kruger placed sixth and Gatchel 20th to lead Ballard. Kruger shot an 18-hole score of 78 and Gatchel tied for 20th with an 89.

Wright tied for 24th with a 90 and Princehouse tied for 31st with a 92 as the other Bomber golfers to turn in counted scores at Webster City. Miller tied for 44th with a 101 and Oldenkamp was 50th with a 103.

Freshman Madelyn Baltes stepped up to lead the Ballard girls golf team to its dual victory over South Hamilton.

Baltes shot a 49 over nine holes to finish medalist runner-up behind South Hamilton's Rebekah Carlson. Carlson won medalist after shooting a 47.

Ballard's Alliyah Thompson and Maddie Kielsmeier tied for third individually at the home dual after they each carded a 52. Aubrey Estrem and Madison Maire tied for sixth after recording identical rounds of 55 and Chastyn Gering placed 11th with a 65.

The Bomber girls had three golfers place in the top 10 during the North Polk triangular at TCI.

Thompson and Kielsmeier tied for fifth after shooting 9-hole scores of 55 and Baltes tied for eighth with a 57. Maire took 11th with a 59, Gering 12th with a 61 and Estrem 14th with a 64.

Roland-Story's Makenna Carlson was medalist with a 43.

The Ballard girls tennis team turned in an impressive outing with its victory over Boone.

The meet was highlighted by a victory by Kiley Calvert and Gracie Ross in the No. 1 doubles match. Calvert and Ross won a three-set thriller, coming back from a 7-6 (7-2) loss in the opening set to take the second by a 6-3 score then winning the ultimate tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-4).

Ballard's No. 2 doubles team of Katelyn Zugay and Vanessa Nop swept Boone's Lucy Hansen and Megan Rose by 6-1 and 6-0 scores. The Bombers' No. 3 team of Ellie Volkmann and Jocie Hobbs pulled off 6-3 and 6-1 victories over Boone's Juliana Lutz and Shannon Jenkins.

Ballard's No. 4 and 5 doubles teams won by identical 6-0 and 6-1 scores. Memphis Inglett and Ava Easter won the No. 4 match over Boone's Annika Byrd and Briley Bennett and the sister tandem of Riley and Payton Askelsen took the No 5. match over the Toreadors' Lineea Trudeau and Emma Gussow.

In singles play Calvert swept Gustafson by 6-2 and 6-4 scores in the No. 2 match, Ross pulled off 6-4 and 6-2 wins over Hansen in the No. 3 match and Nop won the No. 4 match over Lutz with a pair of 6-1 victories. Volkmann added 7-6 (8-6) and 6-3 victories over Jenkins in the No. 5 match and Hobbs took the No. 6 match with 6-0 and 6-1 victories over Rose.

Ballard had no trouble disposing of Nevada.

Calvert and Ross scored an 8-0 shutout over Nevada's Paige Handsaker and Emma DePenning in the No. 1 doubles match and Zugay and Nop also earned an 8-0 win over the Cubs' August Martinez and Megan McGaffin in the No. 2 match. Volkmann and Hobbs pulled off an 8-3 victory over Brooklyn Estes and Kaitlyn McGaffin in the No. 3 match and Easter and Adi Zeigler gave Ballard an 8-2 win over Leah Biensen and Allie Dittmer in the No. 4 match.

The Askelsen sisters took the No. 5 doubles match with an 8-2 victory over Nevada's Harper Schnettgoecke and Gracie Dodson.

In singles play Zugay, Calvert and Ross each scored an 8-1 victory over Martinez, Handsaker and DePenning in the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 matches respectively. Nop pulled off an 8-3 triumph over Meagan McGaffin in the No. 4 match, Volkman downed Estes by an 8-2 score in the No. 5 match and Hobbs won the No. 6 match over Kaitlyn McGaffin by an 8-3 decision.

The Ballard boys tennis team easily overcame losses in both the No. 1 singles and doubles matches to get past Ames.

In singles play Emmett Miller pulled off a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Ames' Jacob Collins in the No. 2 match and Jace Krogh won an 11-9 battle over Eric Zmolek in the No. 3 match. Dawson Brekke and Drew Pingel scored decisive 10-2 victories over Ames' Ben Waddle and Kent Sta Maria in the Nos. 4 and 5 matches, respectively, and Beau Warg pulled off a 10-4 win over the Little Cyclones' Chris Opheim in the No. 6 match.

Doubles play saw the Bomber tandem of Krogh and Culp defeat Zmolek and Sta Maria by a 10-4 score in the No. 2 match. Easton Ersland and Rex Olsan won the No. 3 match by the same 10-4 margin over the Ames team of Opheim and Waddle.

Results for the Newton triangular were not available at press deadline.

Big games from Megan Rowedder and Claire Landmesser lifted the Ballard girls soccer team to its victory over West Marshall.

Rowedder finished with 2 goals and Landmesser tallied 1 goal and assist apiece. Maddie Catron only needed to make one save at keeper for the Bombers.

Ashley Finch scored the lone West Marshall goal.

Not much went right for the Ballard girls against North Polk. The Bombers fell behind 6-0 at the half and never recovered.

Landmesser had Ballard's only shot on goal against the Comets and Koran Johnson made 20 saves. Abby Bell led North Polk with 3 goals and two assists.

The Ballard boys soccer team could not get much going offensively against either North Polk or West Marshall.

Ballard failed to score against North Polk despite getting off 10 shots on goal. Logan Huntrods and Liam Hurst both finished with three shots on goal for the Bombers.

Parker Becker made 10 saves and Conner Pesci added two at keeper for Ballard. Noah Blomquist scored 2 goals and Seth Sparks added 1 goal and two assists for North Polk.

Ballard was held scoreless in the second half against West Marshall after the first half ended in a 1-1 tie. Luis Renk de Moura scored the lone Bomber goal off an assist from Huntrods.

Pesci made three saves at keeper against the Trojans. Ben Richardson and Austin Lane each netted 1 goal for West Marshall.
